"CLI is very accommodating - from classes, an internship, to questions about traveling in China - they made it happen."

Amy Xu, Virginia Tech

"CLI is the second study abroad program in which I have participated, and I could not be more pleased with my experience in Guilin..."

Kevin Keller, Arizona State University

"My favorite part of the Immersion Program was my ability to direct the lesson in the heat of the moment..."

Joe McReynolds, Georgetown University

Housing Options

Included in your CLI tuition is full housing accommodations. CLI holds a high standard when choosing its student housing, and every housing arrangement includes a range of Western amenities.

Single/Double Dorm at CLI
CLI's newly renovated 5-story complex is the perfect location to live, study, eat, relax, and enjoy China.  The CLI building has a max occupancy of 60 students and is also home to several teachers and staff.  All rooms are the same size (whether or not you choose single or double) and have a range of Western amenities, including free WiFi, heating and AC, hot and cold water, and Western toilets (unless you request a Chinese-style toilet).

Homestay
One of the most enriching ways to discover China is through a homestay. Share your living space with a local Guilin family, discuss Chinese culture over dinner with your host parents, and immerse yourself into Chinese society through its most basic unit -- the family.

The homestay option provides direct insight into a typical Chinese family's lifestyle. If you choose this option, you'll be provided a private room in the family's apartment, which usually consists of a dining area, family room, kitchen, two full bathrooms, and three bedrooms. All homestays are within a 15-minute walk from CLI. We carefully select our homestay families from within the Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) community (CLI's university affiliate), and all families have members that are either teachers or administrators at GXNU.

Homestay families provide lunch and dinner daily, but it's up to you whether you'd like to take part in all meals. One rule that is fairly universal in Chinese households that students are often to surprised to hear is that underwear and socks are not to be washed in the family's laundry machine. Most Chinese families require that these items are washed separately by hand. Small cultural intricacies like this are typical of the scope of the issues commonly faced by Western students living in a Chinese household. Many CLI students have built lasting bonds with their homestay families, and have cited shared meals and family excursions throughout the city and its surrounding areas as some of their most memorable experiences.

Private Apartment
For many, the best way to finish a long day of intensive study is to relax at one's own apartment. Live among the city environment in a comfortable one to two-bedroom apartment while attending four hours of one-on-one Chinese language courses throughout the day.

Apartment w/ Chinese Roommates
Integrated housing offers our students the fast track to Chinese fluency. Live with two to three GXNU graduate students in a Western-style apartment and discover China while constantly surrounded by the Mandarin language. You will amaze yourself with the speed at which your Chinese improves.  All CLI students are provided with a private bedroom.

Kevin Keller, Spring Semester 2010
"I lived in an apartment with two graduate students.  The apartment was unbelievable; I had a private Western toilet, a shower, a comfortable queen size bed, AC, heating, a kitchen with all necessary appliances, washing machine, and a HUGE living room.  Really, it was amazing.  I had several friends visit from CIEE Nanjing and none of them could believe how lucky I was."
- Kevin Keller, ASU, B.A. Double Major in Economics and Chinese
